Why is usage time important?

We live in a constantly changing environment, and our skin is exposed to many external factors such as pollution, sunlight and weather. Moreover, pollution, especially in Jakarta, is at its worst! Therefore, the timing of skincare products is not only about efficiency, but also involves protection and prevention.

Our skin has a natural rhythm or circadian rhythm. This is a biological cycle that regulates various body processes, including skin regeneration. During the day, our skin focuses on protecting against external factors such as UV rays and pollution. Therefore, products with antioxidants and sunscreen are essential in the morning.

When the sun goes down, our skin goes into repair and regeneration mode. At night, skin cells work more efficiently in repairing the damage done during the day. This is why night-care measures, such as the use of nutrient-rich serums and nourishing moisturizers, are essential to help the skin repair itself.

The right time of application can also affect the penetration of the product into the skin. Skin tends to be more receptive to active ingredients at certain times. For example, using a serum at night can give the skin more time to absorb and maximize its benefits.

So why is it important for us to use skincare at the right time?

Correct Skincare Usage Sequence

Before we get into the right time to use skincare, it’s good to note down the steps of the sequence first. This also includes what products we use. Check out the skincare routine steps for the morning as follows, Serenitree Squad:

  • Step 1: Face Wash

Skin cleansing is an important first step before using skincare products. Use a gentle facial cleanser that is suitable for your skin type. Make gentle massaging motions with the cleanser, then rinse with warm water.

  • Step 2: Toner

Toner helps balance the skin’s pH and prepares it for the next step. Apply the toner gently with a cotton pad, or simply pat with your hands for better absorption (so the product doesn’t get absorbed by the cotton too!).

  • Step 3: Serum

Serums contain active ingredients that can target specific skin concerns. Apply the serum lightly and let it sit for a while before moving on to the next step.

  • Step 4: Moisturizing/Smoothing Gel

Moisturizers are essential for maintaining skin hydration and moisture. Choose a suitable lightweight moisturizer like aloe soothing gel for the morning and use a night cream for the evening routine!

  • Step 5: Sunscreen (morning-evening only)

UV exposure can damage the skin. Use sunscreen with SPF as needed, especially when doing outdoor activities. This is the last step in your morning skincare regimen!

The order of night skincare use is similar, but the difference is that nighttime is the ideal time for intensive care. So we need to focus on products like night cream, eye cream or sheet mask and retinol to repair and rejuvenate the skin. This step is the same as step number 4 which is moisturizer and soothing gel in the morning skincare sequence. The rest, it’s all the same!

When is the best time to use skincare?

Now that we know the steps, let’s talk about when is the best time to implement this skincare sequence. For details, please see further:

  • 6-8 AM: Rinse Skin with Plain Water

In the morning, before starting your skincare regimen, it’s important to rinse your face with plain water. This helps maintain the natural oils required by the skin. After an overnight stay, the skin can become a little dry due to moisture loss.

  • 8-11 AM: Start Morning Skincare

After cleansing your face, it’s time to start your morning skincare routine! Don’t forget to always finish off with an appropriate SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays!

  • 12-2 PM: Use Face Mist and Sunscreen

During the daytime hours, our skin still needs attention. Use a face mist to refresh your skin and provide additional hydration. This is an optional step to keep your skin moisturized, especially if you’re in an air-conditioned room or under the sun! Also, make sure to reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours, sun exposure is still dangerous even when it’s cloudy.

  • 4-6 PM: Remove Makeup and Double Cleansing

After a long day of activities, don’t forget to remove makeup properly. After that, double cleanse with a facial cleanser to ensure your skin is completely clean. This can help prevent clogged pores and acne.

  • 8-10 PM: Start the Night Skincare Regimen

For your night skincare routine, try to do it close to bedtime! That way, the absorbed skincare can work immediately when the skin regeneration process occurs at night.

Those are the skincare routine guidelines that you can follow! However, since people’s skin conditions and situations vary, it can’t be generalized. That’s why you can consult an expert first for the right adjustment.

Common Mistakes in Skincare Sequence and Timing

One of the most common mistakes we make is changing skincare products frequently. Constantly using new products can confuse your skin and potentially cause negative reactions. Every product needs time to adapt to your skin. It’s best to give a product a few weeks to see if it’s suitable or not before we switch to another product!

Also, more is not necessarily better when it comes to skincare. Using too many products together can cause irritation and excess oil. Additionally, the combination of ingredients from different products can also cause unwanted reactions. Use products wisely and according to your skin’s needs, avoid following trends or just trying things out.

At the end of the day, the steps, products and order of skincare use all come down to the condition of your skin. Different skin types require different treatments! To avoid negative side effects, it’s important to do your research and consult an expert first. Hope this article helps, Sereni-Trees!
