Skincare can indeed keep your skin healthy and protect it from pollution and free radicals. However, there is one important thing that we MUST do in the last step of our skincare routine – sunscreen! Sunscreen is like a shield that protects our skin from the sun’s UVB and UVA rays. If we are exposed without proper protection, there will certainly be consequences.

On this occasion, Serenitree will explain why sunscreen is so important, its benefits, and some do’s and don’ts tips that you need to know about using sunscreen. Using the wrong sunscreen can also cause skin problems. So, let’s take a look together!

Why is sunscreen so important?

Sunlight itself is good for your health because it triggers the synthesis of vitamin D. Vitamin D is beneficial for bone health and increases calcium absorption in the body. However, at the same time, Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can also be a major threat to skin health. Overexposure to UV rays can seriously damage our skin. Therefore, sunscreen is the skin’s first and foremost shield against these harmful UV rays.

Apart from being a shield, sunscreen also plays a role in preventing hyperpigmentation, a condition where the skin color becomes uneven with the appearance of dark patches or blemishes. There are several types of hyperpigmentation, namely: Lentigo, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. If this has already happened, it will be more difficult for us to get rid of it!

Also, hyperpigmentation isn’t the only problem we can avoid with sunscreen. Skin that is overexposed to the sun tends to age faster. Sunscreen helps protect the skin’s collagen, a protein that keeps skin firm and wrinkle-free. You don’t want your glowing skin to age quickly, do you? Especially if it’s already happened, this risk is also difficult to overcome!

Another reason why sunscreen is important for the skin can be seen in its function of reducing the risk of skin cancer. Exposure to UV rays can cause skin cell mutations, or what we call the precursors of skin cancer. Of course, all of this is one of the most serious and dangerous skin problems. But take it easy, with regular sunscreen application, we can avoid it.

Now that Sereni-Trees already understands how important the role of sunscreen is for our skin, we shall not be too lazy to use sunscreen again!

Difference between Physical and Chemical Sunscreen

After we understand the dangers and importance of sunscreen for the skin, the next step is to choose the right sunscreen! Generally, there are 2 types of sunscreen, namely physical sunscreen and chemical sunscreen.

Physical sunscreens, otherwise known as mineral sunscreens, contain active ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They work by forming a physical layer over the skin that reflects UV rays. The advantage of this type of sunscreen is that it works instantly after application and is suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive skin. However, they can leave a white cast on the skin and feel heavier.

Chemical sunscreens contain chemicals such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, or octisalate. They work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat before being released from the skin. The advantage of chemical sunscreens is that they are lighter, do not leave a white film, and are suitable for daily use. But, they may cause irritation to sensitive skin.

Which one is better? Both have their own benefits and drawbacks. It comes down to our own skin preferences and needs.

For each skin type, there are more tips for choosing sunscreen:

Dry Skin

If your skin is dry, choose a sunscreen that contains moisturizing ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid.

Oily Skin

Owners of oily skin should look for a sunscreen that is non-comedogenic. Non-comedogenic means it won’t clog pores and cause acne. Try to choose a water-based or gel sunscreen.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin needs a sunscreen that is free from chemicals so there is less chance of irritation. Physical sunscreen is the best choice for sensitive skin.

Do’s and Don’ts of Using Sunscreen

Now let’s get into the tips for using sunscreen that is good for the skin! It’s useless if you’ve been diligently using sunscreen, but it’s wrong and you end up not getting the benefits perfectly. Here, take note of the Sereni-Trees, Do’s of using sunscreen:

Use at least SPF 30+

Make sure the sunscreen you use has an SPF of at least 30+. A higher SPF provides better protection against UV rays.

Apply 15-20 Minutes Before Activity

Sunscreen needs time to penetrate into the skin and work. Different skin types need different amounts of time!

Choose Sunscreen Type According to Skin Type

Every skin type has different needs. Choose a sunscreen that suits your skin type, whether it’s chemical or physical sunscreen as well as the content and method of application (spray, cream, lotion).

Use Sunscreen Every Day

Make sure to use sunscreen as the last step in your skincare routine! This will keep your skin protected throughout the day.

Use on Unprotected Skin

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen on uncovered parts of the skin such as the ears, neck, and other parts exposed to the sun.

Use Two Fingers/1 Teaspoon

Take enough sunscreen to protect the skin well, no need to overdo it! Two fingers or about a teaspoon is the ideal amount.

Easy right? There are actually not too many complicated things you have to do to apply sunscreen correctly. The last step is to avoid what we should NOT do with sunscreen:

Sunscreen Application Only Once A Day

Once is not enough! Reapply every two hours, especially if you do a lot of outdoor activities.

Not Using Other Protective Equipment

Sunscreen is not the only protection from UV rays. We can reduce the effects of UV rays by using other protective gear such as hats and sunglasses.

Uneven Application

Make sure to apply sunscreen evenly all over your face and body. If not, you will end up with stripes and uneven results!

Only Use Sunscreen in Summer

A common mistake is to only use sunscreen during summer or outdoors. In fact, UV rays are present all year round and we can still be exposed even indoors.

In conclusion, even though the skin is moisturized, hydrated, and nourished by all kinds of skincare, we must still use the shield that is sunscreen! Make sure to choose the right sunscreen for your skin type and condition. You also have to be diligent with your application!

Do you have a complete and varied skincare routine, but still like to skip using sunscreen? This is actually a serious problem, Serenitree Squad. The use of sunscreen or sunblock cannot be underestimated, in fact, this is one of the most important things! It’s useless to use a lot of expensive skincare without protection from the sun. One of the risks can lead to the appearance of black spots!

But don’t worry, today Serenitree will give you an introduction, types and tips of sunscreen so you can choose the right one. So make sure to read this article until the end!

Dangers of UVA and UVB Rays

Especially now when global warming has become more prevalent, we must always protect our skin from the fierce rays of the sun. Sunlight or UVA and UVB can provide a million negative risks to our skin.

Here’s the difference between UVA and UVB:

UVA light: The longest wavelength of all UV rays but with lower energy. These rays can penetrate the skin and usually the negative effects will be seen sooner. Examples include sunburn and dark spots. It can also lead to premature ageing and skin cancer in the future!

UVB rays: In contrast to UVA rays, these rays have higher energy but shorter wavelengths. Instead of entering the skin, these rays can directly damage the skin layer and its DNA. One example is that the skin may burn/damaged melanin.

Of course, continuous exposure to these two rays will have both short-term and long-term negative effects! This is where sunscreen comes in, as a protection from the sun. Whether the climate is hot or cold, sunscreen will protect us, that is why make sure to never skip using it!

Benefits of Sunscreen for Skin Health

Apart from protecting the skin from the sun, sunscreen plays a lot of roles in the health of our skin. Functioning as a protector, here are some of the things we can feel if we use this product regularly:

Prevents premature ageing

Who wants wrinkles, sagging or dry skin? Of course no one! Therefore, in order to avoid this risk, both children, young people and adults must use skin protection with this sunscreen.

Avoiding sunburn

Not only when playing at the beach must you use sunscreen! As long as the sun still appears, UVA and UVB rays are present. Especially if you have sensitive skin, you must really apply sunscreen and use other protections such as hats, umbrellas or long-sleeved clothes.

Say no to blotchy skin

Blotchy skin is also known as hyperpigmentation, which means that certain areas of the skin look darker than others. If it happens, it will be difficult to get rid of it! Sometimes it even needs medical treatment. So, let’s just avoid it!

Lower the risk of skin cancer

Sunscreen plays a role in reducing skin risks because it can protect our skin from UVA rays. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible, we still have to keep ourselves protected from other factors besides UVA rays.

There you have it! Now we can all see how important is sunscreen to the health and wellbeing of our skin right?

3 Types of Sunscreen

There are 3 types of sunscreen that we can choose according to our skin type. The first one is physical sunscreen. The active ingredients of this type are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. The way it works is by becoming a fortress so that UV rays do not penetrate into our skin. For those of you with sensitive and dry skin, this type is ideal, especially since it doesn’t clog your pores. However, the downside is that it can leave a white cast, wears off easily and requires frequent re-application.

The second type is chemical sunscreens. The active ingredients of this type include oxybenzone and avobenzone. This one works by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat to prevent them from entering the skin. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, this type of sunscreen will be perfect for you as it is light-textured and easy to absorb. But the downside is that it may trigger allergies and you have to wait for about 20-30 minutes for it to absorb properly.

Finally, there’s the hybrid sunscreen type. As the name implies, this type is a combination of physical and chemical sunscreen. This is a new innovation that you should try as well because it tends to be more effective with less irritating ingredients. Perfect for those with sensitive skin!

Even so, to choose a suitable product, we always recommend researching the ingredients and conducting a patch test to avoid risks!

Tips for Using Sunscreen

Nowadays in the beauty market, there are many application models, some are in the form of sprays, liquid, sticks and many more. It’s easy, just apply it to the skin!

However, there are a few things that we must remember:

Using sunscreen is the last step in your skincare/makeup routine.

Choose products with at least SPF 30 for strong protection

Reapply after every 2 hours

Use about 15-20 minutes before activities

Always use sunscreen indoors or outdoors

Don’t use too much or too little, humans need at least 35 ml of sunscreen per body.

Apply to the skin surface evenly

It’s so easy, isn’t it? Now there’s no reason to forget or feel lazy in wearing sunscreen. Moreover, there are so many variations that we can choose according to our needs and comfort.

Remember, health is always a priority! After that, glowing, bright and flawless skin will appear by itself. Apart from using sunscreen or skin protection, make sure that skin hygiene and moisture are maintained. Plus, lifestyle and nutrition must be balanced! For tips on a healthy diet for glowing skin, you can see the article here.

Glowing, bright, and supple skin is often associated with the standard of beauty. “Hey, your skin is really glowing!”, “Wow, your face is really smooth”. How often do you hear the praises that are often thrown between these women? Then, what are the questions that usually follow the praise sequence? “What treatments are you using?”, “Where did you buy skincare?”. In the end, it’s no wonder that they finally inform each other about the routines and beauty products they use.

But, is it true that healthy skin is thanks to skincare? Is it true that skin care products that are booming all over the world can have a fantastic effect for us? Well, instead of being all confused and unsure, together let’s find out the truth!

Get to know the function of the skin itself

Before discussing further about skincare, it never hurts to get to know our skin first! Apart from being a standard of beauty, what exactly is the use of our skin?

Helps regulate body temperature

How does the skin, which is located on the outside, regulate our body temperature? Our skin has several layers. Well, in the second layer, there are elements that are responsible for regulating our body temperature, namely the sweat glands and nerves.

When it’s hot, the body will sweat and if the air is cold, the heat in our body will be stored within our body through the narrowing of our blood vessels.

A part of our immune system

Maybe for you skin refers more to “appearance” only. You guys are wrong! It is the skin that protects your body, more precisely the organs of the body from physical or chemical threats. What is the example like?

Your skin protects your body from: UV exposure, germs, pollution, injury and even disease!

As a sense of touch

Humans have 5 senses, namely: sight, smell, taste, hearing and touch. Without these 5 senses, it will certainly complicate our lives! You must know that the skin is the organ responsible for the sense of touch.

How come? Our skin has sensory nerves so it can capture external stimuli such as feeling pressure, pain, pain, heat and others.

As a Vitamin D factory

Plants when exposed to sunlight will undergo the process of photosynthesis. You know, if we are exposed to UV rays from the sun, our skin can also produce something, namely vitamin D. Then the vitamins produced will be distributed to body organs such as kidneys and others.

But don’t forget, if you can, don’t bask in the sun too long because the effects can be dangerous for you!

Skin Regeneration Process

After discussing the importance of skin for us, let’s continue with the skin regeneration process.

Our skin can repair itself (or regenerate) and take care of itself! The proof is that if we have a physical wound, over time the wound can close by itself. The process of skin regeneration will generally occur every 28 days.

The thing you need to remember is that the process will gradually slow down over time. Not only that, the intake of nutrients such as food and vitamins that you consume can also affect the speed. In short, there are only 2 secrets of healthy and glowing skin, namely a healthy lifestyle and the right skin care assistance!

Skincare, Healthy Skin Recipes

After you take care of your skin from the inside with nutrition, vitamins, adequate sleep and a healthy lifestyle, it’s time to take care of your skin from the outside. Skincare is the answer!

The mistake that many people make is that they are late for skin care. Even though we should have started a series of treatments as early as possible according to the condition of each skin.

What are the consequences if we are negligent in treatment? The effect can lead to itching, eczema, dry skin, to dull skin. It won’t be glowing anymore! If something like that happens, our confidence might drop considerably.

You don’t want it to happen. So, give your skin “food” with skincare! This skincare is not only to maintain moisture and clean the skin from dirty particles, it can also shield your skin from free radicals and air pollution that flies from all over.

Skincare Routine 101

Everyone has different skin types, some are dry, oily and so on. Therefore, the type of skincare you need must be adjusted to each condition! Likewise with skin care routines, the steps will not always be the same. That’s not a bad thing! For those who are still confused, here are the guidelines for a series of skin care options that you can choose:

Skin cleanser (Soap for face and body)

The first step always starts with cleaning! This process will shed all the dirt or make-up on our skin. If not done, other skincare series will not function properly.

Facial toner

This step is suitable for those of you who have super dry skin. Toner can help hydrate facial skin!

Facial serum

After your skin is supple and moisturized, it’s time to feed the skin with nutrients from the serum.

Facial moisturizer / body lotion

For extra hydration you can use a moisturizer on your face and body. In addition, this step serves to lock in moisture and nutrients to the skin from the previous treatment series!

Sunblock

This is a very important step but is often forgotten. You really have to use sunblock in the morning and afternoon to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays. If you don’t use sunblock, it can accelerate skin aging!

That’s a series of routines that you can follow. But it’s not over yet, there are some additional series that you can follow but don’t have to do every day. They are exfoliating and face masks. You should apply these two steps 1-2 times a week!

Exfoliating serves to accelerate the removal of dead skin cells using body scrubs or facial scrubs. Meanwhile, the mask serves to soothe the skin and provide additional nutrition to the skin. There are many types of masks that you can choose from, from sheet masks, clay masks, and more!

Hey, have you taken care of your skin properly and regularly? Let’s not be negligent, because healthy skin from the outside and inside will be super glowing and bright. Your self-confidence will automatically rise!
